Workplace Programs

Are your employees stressed? Dealing with chronic health challenges? Wanting to adopt healthier lifestyles? Wanting to lose weight? Quit smoking? Stick to an exercise program?

The value of healthy employees can not be underestimated and results of Heather's work will improve your bottom line and make "work" more fun.

Rising health care costs are a central concern for businesses and cost containment is a top priority. Healthy employees save money; they use fewer health care dollars, are sick less often and perform better at their jobs. They are energized, focused, innovative and creative. How could healthier employees benefit your workplace?

Health Promotion programs are ideal at brown bag lunches, department or company-wide meetings / retreats, benefit fairs, etc.!

The workplace is an ideal location for wellness / health promotion programs because it is a diverse community with social support and clear economic reasons for improving health and productivity. There are numerous studies demonstrating the financial benefit of workplace health promotion.

Employees can learn to reduce health risks, and the benefit is significant personally and professionally. For workers who are "low risk", (i.e already in good health, maintaining a healthy weight, not smoking, etc.) health promotion programs reinforce good behaviors and prevent them from sliding into higher risk categories.

What types of lifestyle factors are manageable through workplace wellness or health promotion programs?

• High stress• Excess Alcohol use
• Inactivity• Blood Glucose
• Overweight• High cholesterol
• Smoking• Depression
• Hypertension• Seat belt use
• Poor nutrition• Diabetes

Heather's workplace health promotion programs are motivating, research based, fun and practical. Presentations blend the theoretical, philosophical and practical to be down-to-earth, user friendly, and effective. Care is given to design presentations that inspire and empower the group to move beyond the "I'll think about it" stage into the "I am taking action" stage.

Knowledge + Positive attitude + Empowered skills = improvements in health behaviors and corresponding benefits!

From there, success builds on itself, as nothing is more motivating than internally realizing the benefits of better self-care.

Tailoring Your Fitness for Personalized Success

You know that exercise is good for you, but do you know what to do to attain your own health and fitness goals? Certified Personal Trainer Heather Main, M. Stress Management for Optimal Energy and Productivity

This is a HUGE topic and can focus on any number of sub categories!

Presentations focus on what an individual can do TODAY to help reduce the effects of stress. Presentations feature ideas that increase focus and energy to build satisfaction in, and out of work.

We'll talk about HOW STRESS AFFECTS ILLNESS, accurately assessing stressors, time management, communication skills, stress and productivity, what's really important, how hydration, nutrition and exercise affect your stress level, what you can do anytime, anyplace to reduce the effects of stress on your nervous system, and more.

Presentations are built to address specific group needs.

Did you know? Sixty to 90% of all visits to health professionals are for some sort of stress-related disorder. Employers who invest in stress reduction programs minimize these costs. Programs that have been shown to give the highest rate of return for the employer include: stress reduction, smoking cessation, and nutrition. Citation: Finkel, M. L. (1996). Health care, a basic guide: Cost management, 3rd ed. Brookfield, WI: International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans.

Weight Management

So many people struggle with their weight, and the diet industry is booming. Weight management presentations focus on positive psychological and sociological strategies to maintaining a healthy weight, and no "diets" are recommended. Success is within reach. It is not easy, but this supportive and empathetic presentation / workshop will empower, motivate and educate participants towards healthy weight loss.

Exercise Motivation

The "trick" with the adoption of any healthy habit is not starting the habit, it's keeping it up. This presentation will overview the best research about exercise adherence, and practical factors that help people stick to a lifetime of fitness.

Anyone can recite a list of benefits of exercise, but most people don't do it, and the health consequences of a sedentary lifestyle are numerous. The "answers" may be simpler than you think, and I promise, no one will be told to get up earlier in the morning for a "refreshing" jog!

Smoking Cessation

Quitting smoking is one of the hardest things to do in life. Nicotine has a powerful hold on the smoker, and people who smoke know it's bad for them. No lectures, I promise.

This workshop will overview best practices for quitting, supply resources for support, and answer any question folks have to better prepare them for a successful attempt at quitting, whenever they decide the time is right for them. I have helped hundreds of people quit smoking through my work with the American Lung Association and can help prepare anyone for the road ahead. Complete multi-session programs are available.

Healthy Low Backs

According to the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, 80 percent of all people will experience some form of back pain during their lifetime. This workshop is developed to address common back pain from overuse, poor posture, lifting techniques, stress, fatigue, weight and weak muscles. In addition to discussing these issues, we will practice stretches and strengthening exercises (that anyone can do!) to help alleviate and prevent further back pain.

Disease Management

Most working people at some point will face the challenge of managing a chronic disease or will be the primary support person for a family member who is. Whether it's high blood pressure, diabetes, arthritis or heart disease (etc.) the stress is significant and we need help navigating through it.

There is a growing body of evidence indicating significant cost savings and "productivity payback" from helping educate employees to more effectively manage health challenges. This workshop will focus on skill building and empowering the individual to manage disease, and "how to be an effective support person" for those helping a family member.

Strategies for Successful Behavior Change

Attempting to change and feeling unable to do so is frustrating. Change is difficult and requires more than just willpower. Chances of making lasting positive change dramatically improve when you understand and proceed through six stages.

Simply put, it's "Get ready?. Get set? Go!" with three additional steps to consider. Attention to and mastery of each stage brings us closer to total success. What helps? What doesn't help? This workshop will blend the theoretical with the practical and ultimately help move you towards the "I did it!" stage.

Living Life in Balance

There are times when one aspect of life takes over to the detriment of other aspects that balance who you are. Life is precious, and we should make the most of it.

This workshop will focus on different dimensions of life that need attention: intellectual, social, occupational, emotional, spiritual and physical. Being able to recognize what is out of kilter, and restore balance will serve as the single best "stress management" technique to greatly improve your ability to enjoy each day with focused energy.

Programs for Parents and Teens Regarding Sex and Drug Use

These discussion focused workshops will orient parents to social norms research which helps us understand how teens are motivated into certain behaviors because of widespread mis-perceptions that, "everybody's doing it."

Talking with teens about perceptions and correcting misperceptions helps reduce the subtle peer pressure to engage in those behaviors.

This work is based on my experience in college health, and can focus on sexual behavior, drug and alcohol use, tobacco use, and / or pressured sex and date rape. There's a fair amount of good news here, and we can talk about using it to help kids stay healthy and safe.
